TESOL Certificate Training Course Overview

The main components of the TESOL Training course are summarized below. They comprise the core of experiences for the “action-reflection” learning model. In all cases, they are documented in detail in the training Portfolio that is kept by the participant. The completion of the Portfolio is guided by the formatting of the entries, and instructions from the trainers.

Foreign Language Experience (FLE). This activity intends to put the teacher in training into the position of the learner. Through this experience the teacher can better understand the excitement and the challenges from the perspective of their students.

Student Profile (SP). The student profile focuses on understanding the learner, and the level of the learner’s English. It includes a focus on “interlanguage,” the language of not-quite-right expression that provides useful insight into the learning process from the student’s perspective.

Language Awareness (LA). Grammar and phonology for the teacher. LA focuses on language form and function rather than the “rules” of English. Teacher’s need to be aware of the language features they are teaching, and the difficulties their students are facing in order to provide them with meaningful models and practice

Teaching Techniques. The approach to teaching techniques is model based – engagement, study and application. This will include – warmers, context & modeling, controlled practice, vocabulary expansion & communicative activities.Teaching Experience (TE). Teachers will teach six practice teaching classes based upon detailed lesson plans according to the lesson models provided. The assessment will focus on what the teacher has been able to “apply” from the course inputs.

Materials Project (MP). The trainee will put together six sets of materials for each of their teaching practice classes.

Evaluation criteria for course participants are outlined in the course curriculum. It will focus on three areas: participation, the portfolio and the practice teaching. The guiding principle is on evaluating what the teacher has learned from this course.

To enroll in the course every potential trainee MUST complete an application. Click below to download an application.
